Digging Deep Into the History and Significance of Plumbing

a plumber giving a thumbs up after a plumbing jobFrom its not-so-humble origins in 1596 to now, flushing water closets—also known as toilets—have been a very important part of modern society. Running water is crucial for any home or business to run smoothly, whether it’s being used for restrooms or in the kitchen. So whenever a plumbing issue arises, everyone can suffer. The history of running water and plumbing in our society is fascinating and full of interesting details. If you’re facing any issues, El Paso Trenchless Solutions is ready to help.

How Plumbing Took Hold of Our Culture

Imagining the world without plumbing can be nightmarish. Many people know this “world” all too well, though, and living a comfortable life day-to-day can be very difficult. Small issues such as dripping faucets to bigger problems such as clogged drains and everything in between can make any homeowner’s hair stand on end. For many, plumbing is something that may not cross anyone’s mind until an issue arises. But if you’ve ever truly stopped to think about how important plumbing truly is, you may feel an overwhelming sensation!

A man by the name of Sir John Harington is responsible for inventing the first flushing toilet in 1596. Funnily enough, Sir Harington was also Queen Elizabeth’s Godson!  Now fast-forward nearly 500 years when, at the turn of the 20th century, the modern water closet was invented! From 1900 to 1932, hundreds of patents for water closet designs passed through the U.S. Patent Office. Of these patients, two included special siphoning water closet designs. Since then, these designs have been the standard for toilets all across the United States.

The Magic of Home Plumbing

Although plumbing is incredibly important, many people tend to see it as magic because the water simply appears and disappears when you turn a knob or pull a lever. As “magical” as that may seem (and feel), plumbing actually requires a lot of care. If your home or business has ever faced an issue, you’re well aware of how big of an issue it can become.

Dripping faucets, for instance, may not seem like such a big deal but in reality, they can cause your home’s water bill to increase! So, if that faucet won’t stop dripping, you should call your plumber as soon as possible! Low water pressure, leaky pipes and clogged drains are much bigger and apparent issues but in reality, all issues require swift attention.
